About Red Rata
Red Rata was conceived in Wanaka when a new mother wondered why all the products for babies were filled with ingredients with unpronouncable names. On researching many of these ingredients, she discovered that many contained harsh, potentially toxic chemicals. So began the search for gentle safer products, made with natural plant based ingredients, that have health benefits, not risks.
Red Rata came about from her personal search for natural home and body care products, which took her to various stores, on and off line. She wanted just one store that she could easily and regularly visit that had all the essentials needed to care for those closest to us.
Many products have been personally tested and the best, most natural products have been hand-picked to care for you, your family and your home. Everything we sell is New Zealand made and sourced from natural ingredients with no harmful chemicals.
Living in one of the most beautiful places on earth, New Zealand, is further inspiration for Red Rata. The mountains, lakes and forests are a gift for us to take care of, and to pass this gift on, unchanged, or better, to our children and our childrens children. We don’t want harsh toxic chemicals in our waterways, or excess packaging in our lanfills. We choose sustainable practices, ones that we hope make less of an impact on our incredible world around us.
Southern Rata (Metrosiderous Umbellata) is a native New Zealand tree with the most vibrant gorgeous red flowers. Visit the West Coast, South Coast or Fiordland between November and January and you will be awed by the glorious red. Red Rata seemed a fitting name for our business as there are many connections – nature, New Zealand, south, plant, gorgeous.
